Issue X

Meet Mr. Hooser

by Destiny Cook

NEAAAT has a new student teacher for World History class. His name is Mr. Hooser and he was assigned here to complete his teaching degree. After he finishes his internship at NEAAAT, he plans to graduate college and search for jobs as a teacher. His mother was a big inspiration for him becoming a teacher. She was a teacher and taught him to help out in his community as much as possible. He has really enjoyed his time at NEAAAT because of the ability of the students. He believes that this school has given him the opportunity to dig deep into history and help the students learn on a higher level. We are happy to have someone like him on our team at NEAAAT.

Chase Update!

At the moment, we are working on getting all of our planting plans prepared for the pond, the pocket wetlands, and the monarch waystation. We already have our list of plants and are working on our models. Cassie is still with Chase at the moment, and we believe that it will stay that way. Mating season is coming soon and we are hoping to see some nests. There are two other couples at the pond that seem to be ready for the mating season as well. We hope that ECSU will accept our plant plans so that we can start funding and get everything planted.

On Friday, February 16, NEAAAT students started their first NASA academy lesson. We did an activity involving simple electronics where we made a circuit out of a resistor, LED, and 9 volt battery. We checked the electrical resistance of our skin with a multi-meter. We are in partnership with NASA and ECSU. The program is 10 weeks long, not necessarily in order, but each session introduces a new module relating to STEAM. Future modules include robotics, chemistry and 3-D printing. Future academies will be conducted on about every other Friday.

Dr. Seuss, a pseudonym for Theodor Seuss Geisel, was a professional kids author that wrote a variety books for children ages 3-9. Dr. Seuss was a brilliant children’s book author and he published very popular books that everyone know. He is most famous for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, “The Cat in the Hat”, and “Green Eggs and Ham”. Throughout his life, he wrote 44 children’s books which have gone on to inspire several related television cartoons, a broadway musical, and several movies. His books have won awards such as a Peabody award and a Pulitzer Prize. Dr. Seuss's birthday is March 2nd and schools around the country celebrate his birthday as a reminder of the children’s book writer whose whimsical rhyming words have made an impact on most of our lives.

Dr. Seuss Day

by Alys Nygaard

Here at NEAAAT, there are plans being worked on to celebrate his contribution to literature with a book marathon throughout the month of march. Look out for more information about this upcoming event.

IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!!

“Don’t let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.”

                            ~ Richard L. Evans

Do you ever feel discouraged? We are all human. We all face daily obstacles. The obstacles we face tend to be out of our control, but we are in control of our mentality. Something as simple as being determined can really have a major impact on the outcome of your situation. If giving up because of discouraging thoughts was the right method, the world would not be filled with celebrities. I personally believe everything happens for a reason. This means everything you endure is to make you better in some sort of way.

Picture your life as a new book.

In the beginning you may not understand it.

As you continue to read, you’re literally just reading events that took place in the book. While reading, you feel like the events are irrelevant and have nothing to do with the story. The resolution is still not completely clear.

By the end of the story you recognize how each event played a role in the resolution. Every event led to something. With this being said, it is okay to get discouraged at times and not understand why something happened. Just make sure you allow the discouragement to make you stronger and not weaker.

Just remember, true success is earned by those who actually work for it.

Career Column

by Jorim Cole

CSI- Forensic Pathologist

“Forensic pathologists are specially trained physicians who examine the bodies of people who died suddenly, unexpectedly, or violently” (ExploreHealthCareers.org 02/05/16).       As a forensic pathologist, you would be the one to determine what caused the death of a person, and how it happened. If identifying different ways of killing interests you, or you have traits as a doctor and detective, then this may be one of the jobs for you.

You would need to graduate with a degree in medical science, particularly in anatomy or clinical pathology. Then, you must take post-medical school training (which usually lasts for 4 more years), which by the end of it, you need to have completed 50 autopsies that have been evaluated. This will earn you the license that you need. Every ten years, you must renew your license. must be re-evaluated.

As a forensic pathologist, you would spend most of your time in a lab, with your most common tool being a microscope. You would have to inspect skin tissue, bones, and other parts of the human body that can give clues to how the person died. You would be expected to write official reports of your findings if the case requires it, and you may have to present your findings in court if the death leads to that point.

The salary range is when you first start ranges from $76,000-$116,000. The average salary ranges from from $150,000-$180,000. Those with full experience may receive over $200,000.

Possible perks include the fact that you can identify what causes murder, and identify how it was done, which can then minimize the chance of it happening again in the future. Someone who has been affected by a death can get the satisfaction of knowing how it was done and who did it. In court, they will be in your gratitude if your evidence helps to win the case.

Negative effects of this job include your exposure to death if you are not one to cope with such things. This is not a job for those who are “squeamish.” You may be exposed to horrible sights, and you can truly see how “evil” some humans can be. Overtime, you may be affected negatively by all of the “sights” that you see.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

by Allie Monahan

Thanks to a wonderful man named Jack Thorne, we Harry Potter fans will get to learn more about Harry Potter’s epilogue. People who love the series are just not satisfied that there were only seven books and simply must have more and more books. Jack Thorne has written a two-part play called “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” centering on one of Harry's children, Albus Severus who often struggles with the weight carried with having Harry Potter, “The Boy Who Live”, “The Chosen One”, and the one who defeated Tom Riddle (sorry to those who have not read the books) as a father. Sadly, the play is only being performed in London but J.K. Rowling had the script put in book format. The play and book  will be released on July 31st, 2016. Many people (including me) must be very excited for the 8th installment of the Harry Potter series because epilogues are simply never enough.

Not to forget the magical creatures of the wizarding world, the movie version of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is coming out on November 18th, 2016 so mark your calendars to see more of Hagrid’s favorite animals!

Origin of the Rubik's Cube

by Allie Monahan

Today we will be talking about the origin of something that you will see almost everywhere at NEAAAT. Almost half of our students own a Rubik’s Cube and a percentage of these people actually know how to solve it (and that does not mean unassembling it). I personally cannot. The 3x3 cube with six different colors has evolved in the last forty years, including the invention of the 2x2 Rubik's Cube that is said to be harder to solve. Many people may wonder how exactly the Rubik’s Cube started. Look no further for you are about to find the answer.

In 2014, the Rubik’s Cube's 40th birthday was celebrated and many were surprised seeing as this toy that has lasted several generations although it was not created as a toy. In the year of 1974, Erno Rubik wanted to create a working model that would show and explain three dimensional geometry. He called it the Magic Cube (twice the size of Rubik’s cubes today) and this is when he realized that he, the inventor could not solve this six sided cube.  Rubik had even said that “It was a code I myself had invented! Yet I could not read it.”. He learned that the Magic Cube has 43 quintillion (43,000,000,000,000,000,000) ways of being rearranged ! To all of those who still have an unsolved cube at home, keep trying because chances are you have not gone through all 43 quintillion ways of it being rearranged. Once he got (take note because this is a way to solve it) all of the corners matched up, he could solve it. That geometric invention by Rubik in the 70’s is still popular after 40 years.

Celebrate! Super Bowl L

by David Johnson

Ten to twenty-four, the final score of Super Bowl 50. Denver Broncos screaming in triumph and Carolina Panthers scream in the agony of defeat. The Super Bowl, a legendary game, came with a lot of surprises, including great offensive and defensive plays on both sides of the field. Going into the game, the Carolina Panthers were favored 8 to 3, the estimated score was 22-19 in Carolina’s favor. Peyton Manning saw this as motivation, knowing that it would more than likely have been his last NFL game.

At the age of 39, Peyton Manning, the oldest starting Quarterback to start in a Super Bowl, said that he looks forward to hopefully winning another Super Bowl in his last year. Despite the three times he was sacked and two fumbles he had in the game, he came out with his fist raised in the air with triumph along with the rest of the Broncos team. He only threw one interception, a very good outing by him in his throwing attempts.

Cam Newton, a 4-year player, was the former 1st pick in the NFL draft back in 2011. The Carolina Panthers and all of their fans counted on him to lead the Panthers first Super Bowl. The Panthers have had one other appearance in the Super Bowl which they lost to the New England Patriots. The Panthers had their best season in all of their 21 years as a team (17-1).

At the post game interviews, Newton was so infuriated that he stormed off of the interview stage. The player who hasn’t felt upset all season thus far took this loss to an extreme as well as Josh Norman, Panthers Cornerback. I personally can understand Newton’s feelings towards losing his first Super Bowl appearance, especially after trying so hard in the regular season. I congratulate the Denver Broncos for their amazing season and their determination, although I was hoping that Carolina would win.

(Sarcastic) Advice

I am offended. You people are apparently so tired of me that you decided, “Hey lets only submit 12 responses!” Listen, I put little to no effort in these things! At least, show some respect for that. It takes no thought or consideration to do these columns! Learn your manners. I’m done with my rant now. Here’s the advice you don’t care for.

how do i get a gf?

First start with capitalizing the beginning of sentences and the letter I. Then maybe don’t use abbreviations like “gf”, then don’t ask a sarcastic advice column for actual advice. Then you still won’t get one you will just be less of an idiot.

can you plz put a no button

     According to my research…

Bananas may or may not be taking over. Bananas are very dangerous, but filled with potassium, and by eating bananas, you can stop their uprising.

I don’t know what to say for this. The google definition for bananas is the following:

"A long curved fruit that grows in clusters and has soft pulpy flesh and yellow skin when ripe."

It doesn’t say that it’s alive. Then again, it doesn’t say it ISN’T alive… sooooo… fair point.

Ur a booty.

You did your research.

Help me I'm being murdered.

Then I supose I’m a little late. Well good luck.

Why do you keep asking us if we need advice if its always sarcastic homie?

  1. I’m not your homie.

  2. Use an apostrophe.

  3. That’s the point of the column.

Why are women terrible?

Okay now, if I answer this, AT ALL, then I will offend nearly everyone alive. EVERYONE. So I will avoid answering this with the comedy I normally would.

I want to wear a pancake on my head but I'm not sure which brand I should use.

Mrs. Butter-Worths. Great for your hair.

halp me what is 2+4/8? I cant figure out mah ath homework halp me pls

Oh my… why… what is “mah ath?” What is “halp?” Also do you mean 2+(4/8)? or (2+4)/8? Two different things.

How can you make a math teacher understand how you learn please be sarcastic bc i hate this school rn

I would imagine you tell her how you learn. Seems simple to me. Think these things through people…

Meet Mr. Stone

by Hannah Umphlett

“As an aviation mechanic in the Navy and even here, teamwork and comradery--or the friendship between one and their fellow workmen--is important to me.” Being able to work in a team, and adapt to your fellow members, is one of the most essential qualities for engineers and students alike should possess. “I’ve been involved in accidents, people--my teammates-- have died, and I’ve even rescued several pilots.”

In 1981, one of his friends tore both of his femoral arteries in his legs, prompting Mr. Stone to swim out to rescue him by tying tourniquets to both legs. Without aid, with diagonal cuts alongside the femur, the average male will lose consciousness after 30 seconds from blood loss.

Stone joined the navy not only to travel across the globe, but also to specialize in an area of work. It is Mr. Stone’s goal that after graduation and four years under his tutelage, students will have the skills needed to choose a STEM related field, but also the social skills to work in a team.

The most recent addition to Northeast Academy’s team of coaches is Mr. Elton Stone, an aviation instructional mechanic and now an instructional coach for Engineering.

“It was not a difficult decision to apply for this job,” Mr. Stone said, “Even though I greatly enjoyed working on airplanes, I wanted to produce a quality group of engineers who were ready for society.”

Ask Athena

I'm being put on medication, does that make me different? -Weirdo

Dear Weirdo,

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret… Everyone's weird and different, some people are just afraid of showing it to people. You'll never find two people who are exactly the same. As for the medication, it's probably being used to help you not hurt you. Don't let it bring your confidence down, some people need that extra help. If you're worried about how the medication is going to affect you, talk to your parents, doctor, or friends. I sure you'll be fine Weirdo.

Love, Athena

P.S. Good luck on your medication.

Fine Brothers Fiasco

by Alan Sessor Jr.

So as a few of you might know, most probably not, the YouTube channel called “Fine Brothers Entertainment”, a channel that makes reactions videos (Kids React, YouTubers React, etc.), said on a YouTube video a few weeks ago that they were creating something called “React World”. React World would require people who make “React” videos pay a licensing fee, basically trademarking “React” and “React videos.”

There is a BIG difference between copyrighting and trademarking.Trademarking is used to distinguish a company or seller as the source of something. When something is trademarked, you have to pay for a licensing fee. This makes what you made promote the trademark, giving them money. On the other hand, copyrighting is an exclusive right to the person who created it. That means the copywriter have to give permission for people to use, or make the copyrighted idea.

Many people got mad over their announcement because “reaction” videos have been a thing long before them. They did say they weren’t going to take videos down, but they had already taken down some videos from others YouTubers. On February 1st, they tweeted out an apology. Check out the link above for the apology tweet.

So it has all ended, so need for you people out there to get mad. Byeeeeee
