Student Ambassadors

by Whitney Williams

On February the 4th, everyone is going to be presenting something of theirs in the student showcase…but the people coming have no idea where they are going. That is where the Student Ambassadors step in! They will be the tour guides for the student showcase and they will do many other things for our school too.

Student ambassadors are students that were hand picked to be “the face of NEAAAT.” Just this week, they began their work for the school by going to the community, meeting people and telling future applicants about the school and PBL use in every class.

The ambassadors will be at the breakfast tables for the rest of the school year. You may see them working with the staff for new projects or other students for tutoring. The students chosen for student ambassadors can help you with questions you have about student activities, classes or schedules.

Chase Update!

We are still feeding Chase daily and he is still doing great with the feeding program. He now recognizes his daily schedule and can often be found by his bowl in the mornings. On February 4th, we will have a Chase table set up and will be selling Chase soaps for a dollar to go to his funds. We are still looking for wildlife grants so that we can buy the plants. The shelter is also still being worked on.

The NEAAAT Times is branching out with a weekly video news update! This project first started mid-January with a few test runs, but NEAAAT News up and ready to go. We have created NEAAAT's first Youtube channel. The plans for this project are to create brief, weekly update videos for students with basic information containing schedules and due dates. Since there are no daily announcements, we have decided to take on the job. We hope to one day advance it enough for there to be daily announcements similar to ones at other schools.

Please leave any feedback or comments in the form below. We would love to get some tips on how to improve NEAAAT News!

Elizabeth City Art Walk

by Destiny Cook

Art can be a way to relieve stress or express yourself. On February 5th, 2016, downtown Elizabeth City will be holding an art walk, just like it does every first friday of the month. Businesses and art galleries will be open later than usual. It lasts from 5:30 to approximately 7:00 pm. Artists are featured and available for you to meet and talk with. The streets come to life with people enjoying food, art, and music. There is sometimes even a drum circle. Please come out and enjoy the art and performances from people of all ages.

NEAAAT Quiz Bowl

by Destiny Cook

Do you have a massive amount of random knowledge? Then Quiz Bowl is the place to be. Quiz Bowl is a competition included in the NCASA, the North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities, sometimes described as a mock Jeopardy. It is a competition where you answer questions in many different subjects. Questions can range from math, to world news, to pop culture. The competition splits up highschoolers and middle schoolers. If you think you may want to join one of NEAAAT’s Quiz Bowl teams, talk to Mrs. Rook.

On January 30th, NEAAAT will be hosting a quiz bowl jamboree. The jamboree is just like a scrimmage, or a practice game. NEAAAT’s quiz bowl teams will be going against students from a total of 4 different schools. Wish our teams good luck!

Never Enough

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

~Dr. Seuss

This quote is expressing that you can never have enough knowledge. Education is important. It is something no one can take from you. However, it is up to the individual. If you take your education seriously, you will notice there are no limitations when it comes to learning. Believe it or not, no one knows everything. We are all skilled in different areas. This is why everyone does not have the same job. We all have different interest. This is why we are all considered unique in many different ways.

Cosmetology

Some people like to wear the latest trends, styles, and fashion. If you are an advocate for stylish trends, you probably see the benefit in wearing the latest hair styles or getting the trendiest haircut too. One profession dedicated to looking good is cosmetology.

So, what is cosmetology? Cosme means "to order beauty". The word Cosme is of French origin. In French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Greek, Cosme is a boy's name. It is a variation of the word Cosmo, which means "orderly harmonious system".

Cosmetology is the study and application of "beauty" treatments or beautifying. There are a large number of areas and techniques of study that fall under cosmetology: hair styling, hair care, skin care, cosmetics, manicures, pedicures, and applying shampooing and conditioning techniques. There are also a large number of speciality area, such as barber, beautician, and beauty clinician.

Certified specialists enroll in training programs to learn and adhere to state's requirements, including safety and sanitation requirements. For example, there is an age requirement to become a barber or hairstylist. You must be at least 16 years old and have either a high school diploma or GED in order to enroll in a certified school. One must complete an approved training program in a valid beauty or barber school and pass a state exam in order to be given a license. A few states allow apprenticeships. Some specialists choose to earn additional certification: a four year degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, or a business degree to own a salon or barber shop. How long it will take to obtain a license can vary depending on the certification program and other factors. For example, the amount of hours required to become a barber varies by state, but the average is an estimated 2000 training hours. For those who decide to do apprenticeship instead of going to school, it usually takes twice as many hours. Most people complete a training program at a school in 12 to 24 months. Again, becoming licensed may depend on the student's diligence, perseverance, and the state's minimum requirements.

Cosmetologists usually earn income by billing the client, receiving payments, and accepting tips. They may also sell products to the client between appointments. The median annual barber salary is $29,308, with a range usually between $23,594-$35,296. The higher annual salary can be $70,000 or more.

If you are interested in becoming a cosmetologist, here are some good websites to look into:

Soup Kitchens and Free Rice

by Abigal Nygaard

There are about 26 soup kitchens in North Carolina today. One in five children receive food from soup kitchens. Imagine if you were that one kid, how you would feel? There are thousands of kids right now that either are homeless, or will be homeless by the end of this year. We can use http://freerice.com to help feed hungry people across the globe today. NEAAAT has created a group on free rice that you anyone can contribute to. A new year means a new reason to help.

Future of Sports at NEAAAT

by Anya Sutton

Last week, I chose to interview Mr. Everett about the future of sports at NEAAAT. His responses are listed below:

What does sports mean to you?

  • It’s a time for bonding and fun.

Do you think that sports can teach children either leadership or membership skills? Why?

  • Yes, both, depending on the activity that is being performed your role may change from leader to member based on the skill set of your team.

Do you feel every school should have sports?

  • No, I believe every school should have opportunities for students to bond, have fun and display leadership skills.

If you could, would you like to be the sports director here at NEAAAT if a sports team is developed?

  • Maybe, it depends on which coaches would be in place to help with the program.

Do you participate in sports?

  • Yes, I currently play with the community recreational teams.

How do you feel about the school not having a sports team?

  • It’s good we don’t have a sports program, now.  The culture of the school is still being defined as we speak.

What are your future plans if NEAAAT gets a sports team?

  • I plan on helping out as much as possible with the sports program.

How has sports impacted your life whether you play them or not?

  • Sports has been an activity that allowed me to impose my will against another human being in a healthy way.

Orgin Of Chocolate Chip Cookies

by Allie Monahan

This week, the Origin Of column will be focusing on the well-loved dessert, and classic cookie: the chocolate chip cookie. Many people’s favorite cookie is the chocolate chip and the first cookie that pops into your head when you are told “classic cookie” (I tested this fact and it is true). Many people might be saying “everyone knows chocolate chip cookies were a mistake and an unknown baker ran out of chocolate powder so thought that chocolate chips would melt, duh!” but sadly this is not true. There is a quite different story to the chocolate chip cookie.

In 1930, a baker named Ruth Wakefield (she owned Toll House, go figure) deliberately invented this cookie. The bakery was well known for a butterscotch nut cookie that everyone loved. Ruth Wakefield once said in an interview "We had been serving a thin butterscotch nut cookie with ice cream. Everybody seemed to love it, but I was trying to give them something different. So I came up with Toll House cookie." (Wikipedia 1/27/16). She used the same recipe but used chocolate chips instead and now on the back of every Toll House chocolate chip bag you will find her original recipe from the 30s. Enjoy your chocolate chip cookies, now that you know their true origin.

Super Bowl L (50)

by David Johnson

As we near the end of the NFL season, we are in the midst of the legendary Super Bowl 50. This year there has been multiple upsets, shutouts, and shocks. The stadium will light up the number 50 in gold, symbolizing the importance of Super Bowl 50. The teams and coaches all gave it their best efforts this year in hopes of getting into the playoffs.

I personally think this season has come as a major shock because one of the usual powerhouse teams, the New Orleans Saints have had a bad season along with the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. While those three teams struggled, three teams participated in breaking an NFL record, the most 8-0 teams in a regular season, the Carolina Panthers, the New England Patriots, and the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Carolina Panthers, a team that mainly struggled last year in both the regular season and the playoffs, now are in the Conference semi-finals with only one loss in their record (17-1). The New England Patriots had a shaky ending to their regular season as they lost two of their wide receivers and their star tight end, Rob Gronkowski, ending their regular season with 3 losses and found themselves in the second spot behind the Denver Broncos who beat them in one of their last games.

The first round of the playoffs ended with many upset fans and team heartaches. The first team that fell was the Cincinnati Bengals who lost by two to the Pittsburgh Steelers(18-16). The Washington Redskins, a surprising season-ending team to pull off what they haven’t done in a while, which is making it to the playoffs. The Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers in what seemed like a one-sided game(35-18). The Minnesota Vikings, another surprise entry, lost in an upset game to the Seattle Seahawks at home with -6-degree weather(10-9).

Super Bowl 50, not too far from us, is on February 7th. It is estimated to be the biggest selling event in America for the past 20 years. The two teams that are going to play in Super Bowl 50 are the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos.  I look forward to seeing how the Super Bowl folds out to be along with most of America.

(Disclaimer: This is a JOKE do not take offense to a JOKE. Just don’t. Do not be that guy that takes this seriously. Once again it’s a joke. Like your life.)

Once again, since apparently it was considerably more funny, I will answer most of the 25 given questions I was given. Enjoy me being disgusted with people's questions, and have fun taking offense to my response.

What do I do if too many people like me and I don't want a relationship?

Say no. I mean, I don’t see the problem here.

How do I breathe?

You don’t be a total idiot.

I have an annoying sister. Feel free to make fun of me... I don't care

Why would I make fun of you for your sister being annoying? “Oh ha ha your sister is annoying you nerd.” There. Happy?

Is Steph Curry the best point guard ever?!?!?!

I looked up this man and have concluded the following response. Screw sports.

I don't know what i want to be when I grow up.

All I’m gonna say is I don’t like mayo on my Big Macs and don’t forget the napkins.

Why is Charlie Puth everywhere?

I wouldn’t know. He seems like a ridiculous failure of a singer.

my mom gets mad at me for nothing

     Don’t they all.

How do I deal with butthurt comments?

I’ll get back to you on that. I have a feeling I will get more than a few with this issue. If I do not, then good job reading the disclaimer!

my bunny ate my homework😂😂 **I'm joking**

I do not care if you are joking or not, no matter what your problem is so minuscule. Therefore I. Do. Not. Care.

my frends always be mean 2 me liek why can i rekt dem liek can you halp me m80

Well if you talk like that then you won’t have friends at all.

Why is it that SOME people break up with other people over a HUG.

They use it as an excuse. They actually hated you the entire time and are just using a minuscule form of affection in order to get you away.

Do you think Donald Trump knows Cthulhu?

Well. I’m not saying he DOES know Cthulhu… But then again I’m not saying he DOESN’T know Cthulhu. Just sayin’

(Side note don’t forget about Hillary. She’s not clean either. *cough* Demons of Salazar *cough*)

help my head is shaped like an egg i'm humpty dumpty. i cannot even tan like an egg

Ah, so THIS is the stupid comment of this issue. Not as stupid as the last one. Step up your game.

Could you wake me up inside?

I can't wake up.

WAKE ME UP INSIDE

You are all incredibly original. And for the sakes of being annoying I will not say it…. (For those who do not get this reference ->                                          )

Ur a butt.

*sniff* If you know how I feel, then why would you say that?!

Chocolate Cake Day

by Aly Nygaard

National Chocolate cake day is January 27. We celebrate this day by eating a lot of Chocolate cake. There are a lot of types of chocolate cake, ex:  Chocolate cake was first made in 1765, when a doctor and a chocolate maker met. While they were together, they grounded up cocoa between huge millstones to create a syrup. The liquid was then poured into molds that were shaped like cakes. A few cooks that made contributions to the development, their names are Sarah Tyson Rorer and Maria Parloa. The first cake mix was created in 1920, by O.Duff and Sons company.

Organized Madness

by Samuel Avondo

Written: 1-28/16

To preface this, I have nothing against the nerds. After a boring week (two weeks) for news, I have things to talk about. I understand there have been some questions about my identity and that of the one using the moniker “The Sarcastic Penguin.” To assist in clarifying the question of whether or not we are the same person, I give you this: I exist on an ethereal plane of existence, caught between the real world and a terrible repeating coma dream of tears and sadness that all reveals the grand use of my life to be sitting in a dark room chained to a metal bed frame typing articles complaining about things that happen in my life and generally misrepresenting groups of people (while those groups tell me I got it all right) while I cry at the futility of it all. That is all.

There is a new afterschool activity. While the so-called “Cubing Club” still seems to be absent, there is a new player in the town. This “Quiz Bowl” is―to describe it simply―an event where a bunch of nerds gather around in a room, organize themselves into teams and yell at each other until one side wins. Kind of like what sports fans do in stadiums, except there is no team of burly men and/or women running around and hitting/kicking things and the screamers take their place. And of course the nerds are competitive, which leads to debates on the rules in an attempt to make the opposing team’s recent gain in points not count. The topics these nerds yell about range from history to literature, mathematics to the sciences, popular culture to the “classics.”

Evidently the title of “Newspaper” isn’t sufficient for the benevolent lords. They also want the title of “Newsvideo.” As such, there is a video in your inbox every Wednesday. Watch it, don’t watch it, do what you want because you’re the master of your world. You can do anything you set your mind to. Anything. I bet you could even survive a 300 meter drop! You should try it, just to see. (Don’t try it.)

Have you had an ache that you couldn’t satisfy? Was it freedom in your nights away from the countless amounts of homework you have put off to get this exact free time that you crave so much? No it wasn’t, don’t lie to yourself. It was the ache of not having a project to have to work on. This is, as you should know, a project-based-learning school. So here I am to inform you of something you already know about: The Rollercoaster Project! Here you will do stuff and things involving rollercoasters, if you couldn’t see that from the name or the description of the project you were given in class and canvas. What’s that? Is my enthusiastic punctuation and questioning tone a disconcerting juxtaposition giving you mixed signals? I have a solution: Stop reading.

Did you ignore my solution and are still reading? Don’t worry, I’ve still got things to talk about. (wonderful, right?)

Evidently the music club that gathers after school is doing stuff. An outrageous thought, I know. But can you stop them? Their dulcet tones and mellifluous notes are too charming. They’ll play you like a fiddle, a flute, a harmonica, a banjo, a guitar, a trumpet or any of the things they’re skilled with. You can’t beat them, I can’t beat them. Resistance is futile.

There was a “snowstorm.” I hear it was a big deal on other parts of the east coast, but don’t you know what they say about this region? “It’s not montreal, say goodbye to the snow and hello to the rain.”

It’s been a long walk. Several people have fallen and couldn’t get up. Presentations were made and presented. Feet hit dirt, gravel, brick, chairs, floors and any other material you can think of. People listened to presentations. People were fired. Some may think it’s over. I myself am skeptical. But whether you believe it or not, the walking tour project is over. It’s over. You can now do all of the other homework you have. Or you can put that off too, just like everything else you’re supposed to do.

I ranted, I confused, I communed (with Cthulhu), I cringed, I broke my spine by cringing, I fixed my spine by cringing. But now I can finally say it: My less-than-stellar piece of Organized Madness has to conclude.

Go check out the literary magazine for writing from NEAAAT students including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and reviews. Art, photography, and performance are also included.
