Spring Formal Sucess

Issue XIV

by Destiny Cook

As most of us know, April 16th was the date of NEAAAT’s first annual formal dance. Tickets were sold from March into April and over 7 students attended. The dance was a great way to get students out of their comfort zone and still have fun. Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. The NEAAAT coaches were able to have some fun as they chaperoned the dance. Even the quietest and most solemn students danced the night away. Everyone’s attire was beautiful and formal. Pictures were taken to commemorate the night. More pictures from the night can be found on Northeast Academy’s website. All in all, formal was a blast and we can’t wait until next year.

Chase Update!

We are very pleased to announce that Chase and Cassie have five eggs! The eggs are about one week old and we are expecting to see them hatch in three to four weeks! Another goose couple already have five goslings and the other couple have had eggs for weeks and we are expecting them to hatch any day now. We are still waiting for ECSU’s reply about the plants so for now all we can do is wait. We are also a bit concerned about the other goose couples and their aggressiveness. They often fly at Chase and Cassie, but other than that everything is good for Chase and Cassie.

Earth Day Festivities

by Allie Monahan

This Earth Day the school was divided, the students who live in Elizabeth City stayed at the Gilchrist building and the students in Edenton went to the local water facility. In Elizabeth City, we had a guest speaker from our water facility come in to tell us about the Flint Michigan water crisis. We also learned about the importance of clean water and about our water facility. Students asked questions after he was done speaking and then went on to the activity.

After we learned about the importance of clean water we got to make our own water filter out of supplies given to us. The supplies that we could choose from were:

  • Cotton Balls

  • Sponge

  • Pantie Hose

  • And Cloth

Once we chose our material (only one) we designed how we wanted to fill our water bottle. We were only allowed to fill it to 8 cm, and no more. After we filled part of our water bottle, the rest of the supplies came in. These included:

  • Aquarium Pebbles

  • Pink Craft Sand

  • And Activated Charcoal

We filled until we reached 8 cm and then attached a coffee filter to the opening of the water bottle. Next, we were given water that had pink food coloring, grass, dirt, and fertilizer. We poured the water in and waited for it to drip out. For some people the water came out completely filtered and some still had a pink tint. This depended on how they designed theirs. We enjoyed this experience and learned how to filter water, and we hope to do it again for next year’s Earth Day!

Center Player's Plays

by Makyla Grant

For the first time ever Center Players is doing two plays in one.  The two plays that are being put together are 101 Dalmatian Jr. and High School Musical Jr.  Madison Teachman is in High School Musical with the part of a cheerleader. Whitney is doing the lighting for both plays

The plays will be in the Maguire Theater at Art of the Albemarle.  They play dates will be May 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 and if there is an encore play May 16th as well.

High School Musical is for the kids 8th to 12th grade and 101 Dalmatians is 7th grade and younger.  Each play cast has been working super hard to perform in front of those who come to see they play.

Something you may find in the hands of many students around the school is trading cards. These have been very popular at school recently and many people may be wondering the origin of them. Today we will learn the origin of trading cards and the brief origins of two of the more popular trading card games: Magic the Gathering and Pokemon. You can both trade and battle with others with these cards and have been collected by both adults and children alike.
The trading card is split into two categories: Sporting and NonSporting cards. The two that we focus on today are NonSporting, with fictional characters. The first kind of Trading Cards were baseball cards. These featured baseball players and facts about them. Trading cards go way back to a card that was called a Trade Card. These were cards that you would find in certain products and were used to advertise them. Later these were changed into a game with characters on them and either facts or in the NonSporting case, attacks.
Magic the Gathering cards are cards that have an enormous amount of possibilities and creature and cards that let you do any number of things. You would play this with two or more players and use your cards special abilities and attack power to try and take down your opponent. This was created by a man named Richard Garfield. He began to design the game in his free time when he was in college, his friends then later helped him refine the game before it was released as a big success on August 5th, 1993.
Pokemon is a huge franchise that includes an Anime, Trading Cards, Video Games, and more. With Pokemon, you have a deck of Pokemon, mythical animals that had many different attacks, energies, and trainers that will help you in the game. The Pokemon have many different types such as grass, fire, water, and much more. The card game was published in Japan in 1996 and based off of some the first games that were on the game boy, Red, Blue, and Green. All parts of the Pokemon franchise are still very popular today including the cards.

Origin of Trading Cards

“I never worry about the problem. I worry about the solution.”

    ~Shaquille O’Neal

We are currently working on our Conflict/Resolution projects. This project was assigned to help students cope with not only major conflicts, but daily conflicts as well. As we all know, conflicts will always be prevalent. The key is to know and understand how to resolve conflicts that may occur.

When people hear the word conflict, they automatically think of a topic such as politics. However, conflicts can be as simple as a confrontation between a friend. There is a certain way to handle a conflict. It all depends upon the severity of the situation.

For example, if a conflict that incorporates bullying is not handled properly, it can result in the death of one.

This is why it is important to understand how to properly evaluate and handle conflicts the correct way.

Weird Fear

by Jorim Cole

Tiabox...

I address you again, this time over the fear of a particular aquatic animal. A sturgeon… why a sturgeon? This answer I know not, but I will broaden this letter to include all species of fish.

Ichthyophobia is the term used for a fear of fish. This can range from eating fish to touching or seeing dead fish. Like most fears, ichthyophobia is usually developed from a traumatic experience during one’s youth. However, fish are also feared because of unexpected encounters when swimming/scuba diving, or because of their distinct smelly odor and slimy texture.

Symptoms of ichthyophobia can vary depending on the person, but the most common sympoms are:

  • Feeling nauseous

  • Trembling, Shaking, or Shivering after exposure to fish

  • Shortness of Breath/Feeling choked

  • Passing Out

  • Freezing on the Spot

Ichthyophobia can be overcome in a variety of ways. Loved ones can encourage the afflicted individual that most fish are harmless. Gradual exposure to fish through pictures, movies, and then real experiences can also help to quell the fear of fish. A risky but potential treatment is to place someone in water with fish to prove to them that the fish actually are harmless. This can be effective, but can also lead to an even more intense fear.

Why a fear of sturgeons, I know not. Sturgeons eat mainly crustaceans and smaller fish, and they are a main source for caviar (fish eggs). Most sturgeon species are critically endangered because of the older age that it takes before they can reproduce, and the specific conditions that they need. Those that do reproduce usually have their eggs eaten by predators or mainly humans.

P.S.  No sturgeons are found naturally south of the Equator, so I would consider moving there if your fear is intense.

Fun Fact:

There are whole tribes of people such as the Navajo tribe that suffer from ichthyophobia, though their fear is more from their myths and beliefs. They feel that fish are taboo and should be avoided at all costs.

NASA Event 4/15

by Seth Moore

On Friday, April 15, We went to the NASA program at Elizabeth City State University. We learned about the basics of planes and how they maneuver. We learned about what roll, yaw, and pitch mean. Roll is when the aircraft moves side to side, yaw is when the nose goes side to side, and pitch is up and down. Students divided into groups and each group built a little plane called the FPG-9 (Foam Plate Glider). We flew those to learn how to adjust the plane so that it would do specific maneuvers like flip or turn around. We thank the ECSU and NEAAAT staff for giving us the opportunity to learn some about aviation.

National Foster Care Month

by Aly Nygaard

May is National foster care day Month. It National Foster care Month provides an opportunity for people all across the nation to focus attention on the year-round needs of American Children and youth in foster care. The campaign raises awareness about foster care and encourages many more citizens to get involved in the lives of these young children and youth, whether as their foster parents, volunteers, mentors, employers or in other ways. It is a time to realize that foster kids matter and they should be adopted or loved by a parent or guardian of some sort. Every year during the month of May, people all around the world are trying to help the foster homes the best they can!

I feel like I don't fit in with my friends. -Outcast

Dear, Outcast

When you spend time with your friends the goal isn’t trying to be like them, it’s to have fun with them. If you just feel uncomfortable hanging out with them try to find a common ground, what you all like to do. And if that doesn’t work talk to your friends they might feel out of place too. And being different might be why your friends hang out with you. Don’t try to change who you are to make them your friends. If they try to make you someone your not then maybe they aren’t really your friends. Your friends should be supportive and kind to you. Be yourself and don’t try to match other people’s expectations.

Love,

Athena

MLS Greatness

by David Johnson

With the MLS (Major League Soccer) season starting not too long ago, I felt like I should even out my articles some because I have written 6 basketball articles this year and three football as well. The MLS teams this year have some great new faces, meanwhile, some teams have the same faces but they are pretty bad this year so far. The Seattle Sounders are an example of one of the teams with close to the same roster but they aren’t doing so hot.

The sounders are indeed my favorite MLS team, which this hurts me to say the following statement; with the record and amount of point the sounders have it’s just down right sad. The team has a record of 2 wins, 1 draw, 4 losses, with 7 points in seven games. The only player they lost was Obafemi Martins, a very good forward who they looked for to score. This season better takes a turn for the good for the Sounders or else I will be very disappointed, I say that because the Sounders are one of the powerhouse teams of the MLS.

The Philadelphia Union, on the other hand, are doing amazing compared to their previous seasons. They have a record of 4 wins, 0 draws, and 3 losses and 12 points in seven games. The team which is not known for having a great season for the last 4 or 5 seasons because of a poor roster. The Union hasn't made the playoffs since 2010, in which they were eliminated in the first round. The Union has some great players this year like, Fabian Herbers, Vincent Nogueira, and Joshua Yaro.

With the season and teams being so lopsided it may or may not be a great season or fun to watch season. The MLS is really one of the only ways certain American soccer players can watch soccer unless they have NBC-sports network. I highly praise the MLS and all of the teams for their hard work and dedication. I close with GO SEATTLE SOUNDERS!

Written 4/28/16

To preface this I am not a resident of Innsmouth. Here we are, another issue, more filler, more rambling and more eldritch horror. Things have happened, other things have not happened. There are cards of kindness, zones of danger, developments of dread.

A bit of news for any couples that may be stalking about the school: There are new rules regarding PDA (public displays of affection), or as they’ve been coined now “IDA” (inappropriate displays of affection). The first time you get caught you get a phone call to your parents without warning. The second time you get the Penalty Box and the third time you get a referral. What exactly constitutes an inappropriate display of affection has not been stated, leaving everything to the dice. And I’d assume that there’s a small amount of discrimination here, as a display of affection (like a hug, for example) between a male and female would be assumed as meant to be romantic and called out, even if it was supposed to be platonic, whereas the same interaction between two of the same sex would be interpreted as interaction between friends. Which means that, for the first time in history, heterosexual couples will be discriminated against. But, you know, the easiest way to stop discrimination is to discriminate against everyone.

The Friday of last week was Earth day, because people need a special day to actually care about the Earth and where half the school were in different places for a half day and getting shouted at by people in the field of water filtration, or something similar. All so we may learn to better love the Earth, and become followers of Captain Planet.

On the next installment of “Help The Nerds!” the Quiz Bowl team has started to sell flowers, ice cream and offer car washes so they can earn money and achieve their dreams of becoming Top Gun. Or Top Nerd. Or whatever they want. The car washing starts on Saturday, April 30th, for anyone who wants to watch some people wash your car, or wash someone else’s car.

And with all of this information bestowed upon you, I shall be forced to bid you farewell. Which means that my wonderful piece of organized madness must conclude.

What would a wood chuck, chuck if he could chuck wood?

Nothing. A woodchuck is a groundhog. All they do is see or don’t see their own shadow. Nothing with wood. Do your research.

There is a girl. She is beautiful. Amazing. She hates me.

That leaves a large list of people. Especially with that last part.

What are these friends you speak of?

I didn’t say anything about friends… But if you were wondering if you have any friends then no. The answer is no.

Boatsafuisdhiufhdaugfhoiuasdfhius, sorry had a typing problem. So how's life?

Well I haven’t drank any coffee yet and no one has been in an “accident” so, I’d say pretty good.

How does Dark Humor work?

Dark humor is when someone makes a joke that makes you feel like bathing in holy water to wash away the sins. Yet despite this you still laugh

I'm breathing. But I don't think it's working.

I’m trying to care. But I don’t think it’s working.

Why is Math Tutoring so pricey? it's twice over minimum wage that seems like you're being ripped off. It might be holding back potential customers. It doesn't have enough information for potential customers.

Wait, it’s twice minimum wage? Wow. Kids their age do twice the work make half as less. #Smh #checkyourprivilege

What are chem trails?

A chemtrail is apart of a conspiracy that the trails emitted from planes actually have some sort of chemical in them for a sinister purpose not disclosed to the public. *sigh*

How do I know if a girl likes me?

This is an easy one! You don’t. You just don’t. If they tell you they like you, you still have no way of knowing. Then again this applies for anyone period. Humans are annoying.

I need good grades... how do i better improve my studying habits?

You look at a book, then stop reading it and put it under your pillow when you go to bed. You will absorb the knowledge then become Einstein #2.
