Issue XVI

by Destiny Cook

Last week, several girls from NEAAAT travelled to Port Discover to participate in PARI’s 3D Planets program. The purpose of the program is to get girls interested in STEM by allowing them to be creative and build their designs using a 3D printer. The YOUNG WOMEN took part in 3D printing activities and learned more about the challenges of having an eye impairment. By the end of the program, each student had designed and 3D printed a crater from either the moon or mars with a braille label. This was meant to teach students how to create something helpful using 3D printing. The entire experience was a great learning opportunity for all of the NEAAAT students involved.

Chase Update!

To debunk the rumors that have been passed throughout NEAAAT, Chase is alive and well. Recently, a Red Tailed Hawk has begun nesting and has been picking geese off but now all of the geese in ECSU have come together to form one large flock so that they have strength in numbers and no other goose will be taken. Chase will continue to be fed over the summer. Unfortunately, Chase and Cassie have abandoned their nest. This is due to landscaping, other geese, and students constantly being near the nest. Chase always tried to keep others away from the nest and we fed him away from the nest but the they still left it. This does not mean that Cassie will leave Chase, but they will wait until next year to try again. Thank you for reading the Chase Update. To continue to get updates throughout the summer, look for us on Facebook!

Unsportsmanship Pandemic

by David Johnson

I have decided to take a curve on my regular style of sports writing this week. Instead of an article about something going on in the sports world, I am going to talk about the pandemic of unsportsmanlike conduct. I have been unsportsmanlike very recently-- I recently lost a championship soccer game with the final score being four to three. After the game I didn’t shake hands with any of the other players and instead I went straight to the bench, took my gear off and slammed it down on the ground by the bench in dismay and anger. After I got my trophy from my coach, I gathered the rest of my stuff and left the scene.

After being chewed out by my mom, I was kind of forced to write this article in reflection of my very childlike and unsportsmanlike behavior. Now the reason unsportsmanlike conduct is a pandemic is because 86% of all  sports players have performed a form of unsportsmanlike conduct. Between amateurs and professional athletes, there has been so much unsportsmanlike conduct performed that it could be considered a death total.

Now that I have had time to think and look back at my super immature and childish actions after losing that game, I realize that I looked totally unprofessional. I also realized that I made a bad impression on my little brother as to what to do when losing in a very tough situation. My actions, I know I can’t change them and all I can do is apologize to my team, my coach, and the other team. I know that if there would’ve been scouts there I would’ve looked like a little baby who has a big problem losing (which I do, I am a very sore loser; I would much rather be shot then lose).

With my hatred of losing,I always try to do my best to prevent a loss. I try to keep my team going and the flow of the game continuing. I know that people have different outlooks on losing and how to take a loss, while  I take the loss really hard, especially in an elimination game. There is many types of showing unsportsmanlike conduct, between just looking like a baby, screaming at fellow team mates for “screwing up”, and yelling at the refs for making crappy calls.

Now, I would like to say that I will never act like i did after that game, but I can’t promise anything. I know my mom wouldn’t let me play another sport if I did, so I am just going to leave it at I will do my best to not act like that. In conclusion, I have one thing to say, if you lose something very exciting and very intense, try your best to keep your cool. You never know who is watching.

No Tobacco Day

by Alys Nygaard

On May 31, it is No Tobacco day. This day brings awareness to the health issues and addiction related to tobacco use. No Tobacco day also helps people quit smoking, and shows that people can actually help them quit. This national holiday helps people realize that it can cause a disease and cancer and even death. It is a serious problem in this world.

Summer’s coming and that means endless amounts of camps. How do I deal? -Notahappycamper

Dear, Notahappycamper

I’ve felt your pain of having to go to so many summer camps especially when you don’t have a choice. Before your final attempt of begging your parents to take you out of camp, I suggest you look up the camps find out more about them don’t just go off of your parents description. Find out the types of activities, maybe even injuries (you can use this in your case of not going to your parents). But if you don’t find any faults, then you might be out of luck, but at least now you know how camp is going to be and you might have found a reason to enjoy it. If you really end up thinking that the camp is going to be awful and it’s not too late, give your one final attempt and ask your parents again to reconsider. Good luck!

PBL Conflict Expo

by Isabelle Wilson

May 19th, 2016 - The PBL Conflict Expo. To present our learning a final time for the 2015-2016 year, NEAAAT has hosted an exposition of learning to student families and the public, including ECSU staff. Investigative Study project boards were set up in the hallways on the first and third floors, amongst the Conflict and Resolution projects, which were presented personally by their individual groups. Many presentations from the February 4th Expo were featured as well. In summary, the exposition went quite well.

Festival. Taking place in historic downtown Elizabeth City, the event features the National Potato Peeling Contest, Little Miss Tater Tot pageant, potato sack races, a mini carnival, and more. There is also live music from local bands, aerial fly-overs courtesy of the nearby Coast Guard Air Station, and lots of unique vendors. This year, the Potato festival will return again on Friday, May 20, 2016,  bigger and better than ever.

Fear of School

By Jorim Cole

Addressed to the NEAAAT Student Body,

Summer break is almost upon us. This is  beneficial to us all, especially those of us who suffer from the fear of school.  The fear of school, known as Didaskaleinophobia, affects 2-5% of children that go to school. Didaskaleinophobia is derived from the Greek word “Didasko” meaning “to teach” and phobos meaning  “fear.”

Didaskaleinophobia is most common in preschool and kindergarten kids aged 4-6, but it can be difficult to determine as the fear. Most kids at this age cannot express their fears clearly, and may in fact be afraid of something experienced at school rather than school itself. Teenage students also experience this fear as their workload increases tremendously and the topic difficulty that they learn increase. Bullying, harsh teachers, shootings in school, etc. can cause a fear of school.

Symptoms of Didaskaleinophobia May Include:

  • Crying/Screaming at the thought of going to school

  • Crying excessively the night before going to school

  • Faking illness to avoid school

  • Constantly thinking of loved ones in school, and closely shadowing loved ones outside of school

  • Faking illness to avoid school

  • Depression

  • Dizziness

  • Heart Palpitations

  • Dry Mouth

  • Excessive Sweating

  • Breathlessness

  • Nausea

Didaskaleinophobia is curable, especially at a young age. Therapy is a recommended option on children, who are more able to be affected by the therapy. Drugs are not recommended as they only reduce symptoms instead of relieving them. Instead, find out why someone is afraid of school, and what can be done to minimize the fear. Positive visualization, music, and deep breathing can also minimize the fear of school.

The horror is almost over. In a few days, we’ll be done with this school year. Any of us with Didaskaleinophobia will be spared for another two months before we face the horror again. Use your break wisely….

We are already working on our plans for TNT next year! As NEAAAT doubles in size, so will its electronic newspaper. Next year, there will be a different website, a brand new look, andmore content. This is not the end of TNT.
