Happy Valentine's Day

Beautiful Project

Kindness is a powerful attitude that you can show towards someone. By telling someone they look nice or even going to get them a drink can make someone’s day. I did an experiment to see the visual reaction of a bit of kindness: telling someone they are beautiful. I took a picture of a few people and then I said “Guess what? You’re beautiful.” and then took another picture.

The visual reaction was a brighter smile or an expression of surprise. Having someone be kind to you can change your brain chemistry to being more kind yourself. By getting the exposure to kindness and the knowledge that someone went out of their way to tell you something positive, you feel the warmth and strength of being empowered and can feel compelled to help other people feel the same way.

Valentine's Day is coming up and I have a task for you. Give someone a compliment. A cheesy pick-up line if you will. As you may have noticed, there are tons around the school.  Give it to someone. Tell someone they look nice or just try to make them smile.

Mrs. Rook was one of my test subjects. I asked her how she felt when I told her she looked beautiful. “I felt my entire face and all of my features relax and I felt very loved.” Showing someone this simple act of kindness can make someone feel wanted and loved. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Chase Update

Valentine's day is known by most people as the day of love. What most people don’t know is that it is the same for geese. Instead of Valentine’s day it is known as courtship season. Canada geese mate for life so when they are 2 - 7 years old they look for their life long mate. This period is courtship season when the geese start to show females that they can protect them and provide food for them. We have named this new goose Cassie. She follows Chase everywhere and eats with him. Chase is always protecting her from the other geese and when one is sleeping the other stands guard. Hopefully the tow will say together and start to lay their eggs. We have also got the goose hollow repaired and just need to put it outside.

Happy Valentine’s day from Chase and Cassie!

Student Exposition Success

by Grace Bassett

The student exposition on last Thursday, February 4th, was a huge success! Every NEAAAT student had the opportunity to showcase their work from the past semester. The NEAAAT Times had its own display. People were interviewed by the Daily Advance and their article about it came out on Wednesday. All of the feedback from the exposition was positive. Parents, teachers, and visitors were all very impressed.

There are plans for another exposition in the future. CEO Harris said ”We will likely hold another Exhibition of Student Learning in late May or early June. The purpose is the same: developing professional skills while sharing your learning with others.”

Prom Update!

Contradicting to what you’ve heard there will be no prom. But on a happy note there will be a spring formal. Our awesome teachers (Mrs. Wilder, Mrs. Rook, and Mrs. Moore) are try to get the formal to take place in a bigger venue on the ECSU campus. Bigger venue also means higher prices for the tickets, but don’t worry the SGA will try their best to make the tickets as affordable as possible. There might be another google form sent out to NEAAAT with more accurate information.  More spring formal updates to come. That’s all for now thanks for reading! ;)

Black History Month

By Ivone’ Tatem

“Black History Month must be more than just a month of remembrance; it should be a tribute to our history and reminder of the work that lies in the months and years ahead.”

                               ~Marty Meehan

What is Black History Month? Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States of America, Canada, and the United Kingdom for Africans that made an impact on the world. This month demonstrates a celebration of achievement pertaining to African Americans. Black History Month was established in the year of 1926. This month is extremely to Africans because of what they endured. They had to face hard times just because of the color of their skin.

Now we look beyond a skin color. Even though the world is not perfect, each day is a new beginning. Do not let history stand as a subject we learn about, but let it stand as the key to unlock success.

Let it stand as the key to unity.

Let it stand as the key to the future.

Let it stand as a remembrance of the past and the vision of the future.

A Couple of Black History Month Facts:

~ In 2013, New York had the most African-American residents, with 3.7 million.

~ Black History Month started as a week instead of a month.

Origin of Valentine's Day

by Ky Grant

Valentine’s Day is on February 14.  Valentine’s Day started because of an Ancient Roman ritual. There are many stories that make up Valentine’s day each including one saint named Valentine.  They also called Valentine, Valentinus.  Each Valentine somewhat had a different story.

The first story starts when the emperor Claudius II said that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and children.  He outlawed men being able to marry.  Saint Valentine secretly married people during the month of February.  When Valentine was discovered, Claudius ordered Valentine to be put to death.  Another story was said that Valentine was killed for helping Christians escape the Roman’s prisons.  People say the Saint Valentine was the first to send a Valentine's greeting to his lover while he was imprisoned and that he signed his card from “your Valentine”.  Most of these stories were said to emphasizes from the truth and that Valentine was a sympathetic hero or a figure of romance, but this holiday has lasted for hundreds of years so that must mean that Valentine was a really great hero.

After winning last year's NCAA championship, the Duke Blue Devils have come out the starting gate with a 4-1 record. The blue Devils, led by Coach K, are unranked while their cross-town rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels are number 9. As the Duke team had a challenging schedule ahead with Kentucky as their first loss. Kentucky was the second ranked team this year. After the loss to Kentucky, the Blue Devils took on VCU. Now with 6 losses in their record,17-6, they lost three in a row, those loses were due to Clemson, Notre Dame, and Syracuse. The Blue Devils beat another cross-town rival, North Carolina State in hopes to get back on track of winning to lose to Miami within 3 days then to find themselves beating NC State again and then Louisville.

Duke Blue Devils

by David Johnson

This year, when the NCAA AP top 25 were listed and announced to the public, many were shocked to see that Duke was ranked fifth. They were shocked because Duke had recruited and now have the two biggest basketball prospects, one from Winston-Salem, Harry Giles. The other, Jayson Tatum from Saint Louis, Missouri. These two players were believed to be the “forward brothers”, as Giles is a power forward and Tatum is a small forward.

The legendary coach for Duke, Mike Krzyzewski has stated that he can almost guarantee another sweet sixteen and hopefully a final four spot for Duke. If his prediction is right then Duke will have 29 sweet sixteen and 17 final four appearances. The legendary fan craze, the Cameron crazies are supporting coach K’s prediction. The students at Duke are showing their pride by hanging banners that read all hail Duke.

If Duke does pull this season out to another championship then the whole campus of Duke and all of the Duke fans around the world will be celebrating. Duke has the second biggest college fan base in all of NCAA men’s basketball. Duke prides themselves of having that big of a fan base, they show it by giving away free t-shirts to every person who attends a major home game.

I look forward to the rest of the season along with the rest of Duke nation.

>  If you were stranded for forever on a desert island, what book would you like to have with you?

> How to build a boat. I would choose this so that I could learn to build a boat and get off. If I couldn't build a boat though

> If you were stranded for forever on a desert island, what book would you like to have with you?

> I would choose Harry Potter... and the Deathly Hallows? Any of them would be fine but that is my favorite out of all of them.

> What did you have for breakfast?

> I think I had a bagel...

> Who’s your favorite Disney princess and why?

> My favorite Disney Princess was Nala (I count her as a princess) because I loved The Lion King.

> Bonus:  If Chase the Goose, wasn't a goose, what animal would you rather Chase be?

>  Hmmm this is tough, I love all animals but I guess that I can't have a Noah's Ark full of animals because that wouldn't fit on the pond. Maybe a Wolf or maybe a Deer, perhaps a squirrel. I'm not that picky with my animals. Any would do. A dog would be fine, or a cat, an Elephant would be pretty cool though..... I choose a miniature Noah's Ark that would have one of each animal instead of two so that I could have one of each. Pretty much anything but mosquitoes because I'm allergic to their bites and ECSU would definitely not approve of a mosquito farm on their land.

( Disclaimer: This is a set of jokes. Not a set of my serious opinion about you and your life. So take it like a joke. A.K.A Laugh, don’t send me an email about how offended you are.)

Oh great. A day that is used to celebrate love. It is also a day to make people that are not dating anyone, to feel bad about themselves and cry in a hole of their own self-pity. Of course, Hallmark loves it and so does any store ever. Love is in the air people, luckily for me, I have a vaccine. (Note: These questions are word for word what the people sent.)

Bae wont text back.

Is it because of your face? Or because you sent 5 long messages professing your love and they just avoided you and will continue to? Need more info.

I'm single, I am very lonely.

So are you lonely because you're single? Or are you single because you’re lonely? Or none of the above? Need more info.

need a boyfriend asap, need to not be left on read, need love

This is sarcastic advice, not Craigs List, you moron.

What should I get bae for Valentines day?

A new bae. Obviously, their old one is stupid.

So I still don't know how to breathe and it's making the situation ten times harder. Please help. My Valentine doesn't know what to do D:

Honestly, if you can’t breathe then it’s better for the rest of us.

I keep getting dark chocolate for valentines and a hate dark chocolate!

So you are complaining about having food while there are people in Africa that don’t have food at all? Check your privilege!

How do i make Chocolate faces?

Step 1: Get a bowl of melted chocolate.

Step 2: Lure victim to bowl.

Step 3: Drown them in the chocolate.

Step 4: Use their face as a mold.

Step 5: Cool till their blood is no longer warm.

     Step 6: Serve

Why do people care about Valentines day?

     Beats me man.

So. It's "forever alone" day, isn't it? If EVERYONE'S talking about how everyone but them has a boy/girlfriend, then that means no one has one, right? Or do we all have a voice in our head that's constantly telling you that love is blind?

It’s not that no one has a partner, it’s that the ones that don’t are the only ones you hear due to their salt.

My girlfriend lives over 500 miles away, and I don't know the next time that I will see them.

Does she really live 500 miles away? Really? Alright if you say so. Your TOTALLY real girlfriend seems like a VERY lucky person.

Now if she is really real… Send her this. (First time I’ve ever given legit advice.)

My friends are trying to set me up. He probably isn't interested and he is cute but they think I like him even though I've talked to him like once ??

So I’m confused: do you want to be set up with him or do you not? You are very vague. Sounds like to me that you should make up your mind before you send me this crap. Need more info.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BUY A BOY FOR VALENTINES DAY

You should buy him a new necklace for his jewelry collection. Or a bouquet of roses! Or even a box of chocolates in the shape of a heart! Or the best, a life-sized teddy bear.

Chase the goose got a girlfriend before me!

     HAHA HAHA HAHA. Me too…*snif*

Actually, this isnt a question. But i guess you know that? Okay well its a saturday night and im checking my student email... Valentines day sucks. cause most of the time people get you hyped up over like, a dollar tree teddy bear. idk. dont put this in the newspaper. what am i doing.

What you’re doing is submitting what you don’t want to be in the newspaper, to a person who is quite obviously going to put it in the newspaper. To respond to this not-a-question, yes.

Ur a butt.

     Need more info.

so liek i dont know why my bf wont mention valentiens day... liek is he trying to brek up wit me or liek...i don t know ... help

Spell check is currently having a seizure at the moronic statement that you decided would be a good idea to send me. My brain cells are rapidly depleting the longer I look at it. I feel that your writing is a terrible creation that is better off under the ocean than here. In no way was any of that response anything worth saying or typing. I was tempted to fly to Hawaii throw my chromebook in Mauna Loa just to get rid of this horrid disaster of a comment. I hope that one day you will be cured from the parasite that is your intelligence or rather, lack thereof, and may god have mercy on your soul.

Valentine's Day (Sarcastic) Advice

by (Sarcastic) Penguin

“Software Engineers analyze a user's needs and then design, test, and develop software by applying the theories and principles of computer science and mathematical analysis” (Lema, Chris  01/27/16)

Computer software designers use science and mathematics to develop applications for multiple purposes. Software designers should be familiar with multiple computer systems and technologies. Software engineers tend to major in computer science, computer information systems, software engineering, and/or mathematics. The job requires at least a bachelor's degree in a field related to computer science, but a master's degree may be needed for more complex roles.

Software engineers are involved in all aspects of software creation, from writing code and debugging programs to overseeing the launch of a new software. They often start out writing code, but eventually advance to senior positions, often working as software “architects” or project managers. In a software engineer’s career, it is essential to keep up with the latest technological advancements, seeing as how technology is constantly evolving.

Possible perks include the fact that you will be in a comfortable setting, and you will know what software you are putting out there. As your software becomes increasingly popular, you will know that it was you who had a part in making it happen.

Unfortunately, you will also be under constant pressure, and deadlines will often be “tight.” If a software has a major bug, you will be responsible and will probably have to repair it if you are not laid off, or if the task is not given to someone more competent or of higher skill. About one quarter of software developers worked for more than 40 hours per week in 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). You can expect 40 hours, but do not be surprised if you end up working for a little longer.

Mean Salary (2013)- $96,260 for all application software developers

Projected Job Growth (2012-2022)- 23% for application software developers

Organized Madness

by Samuel Avondo

To preface this, I am in no way conducting any unusual interactions with the use of question marks. None at all. Do you like it when people get to the things you want them to talk about? Would you prefer they do that rather than skirting around the topics with questions they already know the answers to in an attempt to fill space? Yeah? That’s good for you. It’s a nice preference to have.

Have you noticed that there’s something a bit different? I’m finding that there’s considerably more pink around than there was previously. And red. And chocolate. I did some quick research on Google for what’s happening and I found that evidently, and I didn’t know this, February is not only black history month, but it is also evidently, arbitrarily tied to romance. I also didn’t know why so I went back to Wikiped―I mean my totally reliable sources from time travellers―and read some more things. February 14th is named as Valentine’s Day because someone decided to be a bit more charitable than usual and then was killed. As is the fate of all martyrs, I suppose.

After a week of them do you feel like you’ve been given a great opportunity to connect with new classmates in light of the recent schedule changes? No? My constant questioning of an audience I can’t hear and don’t listen to annoys you? Why do you speak such heresy? No matter your opinion on questions one thing remains true: You are more than likely dissatisfied with one of the classes you’ve been switched to.

Did you guys have fun at the Expo? Why not? Was it the presenting things to adult men and women at uncertain intervals? Was it the sitting at a tri-fold you didn’t make particularly visually appealing as people walked by you with nothing more than a passing glance? Sucks to be you then. I would praise some of the people who made eye-catching presentations but I don’t know what a compliment is, so I can’t.

There are some new people. The first new person I’ll mention is the new student teacher, Mr. Hoosier. He’s a bearded man, a trait slightly more uncommon in the school since the departure of Mr. Hamby. He’s also been told that someone has a theory that he is actually an ex-Amish man who barely escaped the life and wishes to integrate into society. I personally don’t think this is true, but the “pleb” that said this may.

The next new person is Mr. Elton Stone, the new engineering teacher. With his arrival, the engineering classroom is now in room 304 and the science classroom is now in room 301. I don’t really have much to say about the man since there are no tinfoil theories around him (that I know of). Also, with his arrival is marked the departure of the man, the myth, the legend: Mr. Fearing. A man of sheer terror, striking fear into the hearts of his enemies. And now he is gone, to return at a later date when the world is in need of his salvation once more.

There it is. It’s over. It’s done. You can go now. Be free Willie! And with that, my wonderful piece of organized madness has to conclude.
