NEAAAT students took most of the day off last Friday, November 13, to see the play The Suessical.  The Suessical is the story of Jojo, a little girl who is very different. The play incorporates tales from other Dr. Suess stories. Two NEAAAT students participated in the play, Whitney Williams and Makyla Grant. It was a fun change for NEAAAT students from being in the classroom to going out to support NEAAAT students and enjoy the play.

Chase Update!

NEAAAT students will be building Chase’s hollow next week in Engineering class. Chase seems to be getting used to flocks coming and going .The Chase Activists have a list of people that may be able to transport him to the vet so he can get his bad wing looked at. They are also still working on the NC Beautiful grant that gives $1000 to Chase’s funds for the plants. There will be another fundraiser for Chase coming soon. Our biggest concern for Chase is his lack of shelter. He is fine for now because it is still warm, but he will need a shelter soon.

Mr. Hamby's Failure Reframed

By Hannah Umphlett

Your mindset can change and shift your perspective on situations. Having an optimistic mindset will typically lead to positive events and effects. Having a pessimistic mindset however, will lead to less than satisfactory events.

Mr. Brad Hamby, NEAAAT’s science coach, exemplifies the idea that a negative mindset will lead to negative consequences and usually, failures.

Mr. Hamby wanted to pose with another student (Connor Reavis).

One of Hamby’s biggest failures was when he dropped out of university and began working a part time job as a Pizza Hut delivery boy. “I was kind of angry that I didn’t pursue my education and [I] was stuck in a low paying job.” After dropping out, Hamby developed a pessimistic view on his achievements and even at dating. “I was so horrible and failed at dating and relationships, in general. It got to the point where I decided I just wasn’t going to date anymore, because every date seemed to lead to a disaster.”

“I came to the conclusion that if it’s the right person, it should be easy.” Soon, Mr. Hamby changed his mindset of encountering failure to whatever happens, happens. He could not change that fact he had dropped out of university, but he could change how he acted afterwards.

This particular failure of his and change of mindset lead to one of the biggest and absolutely greatest things to happen to him: Meeting his wife.

     Mindset truly is everything.

NEAAAT’s Art Showcase team took 1st place in the Eastern Regional competition. Three students from Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies placed in five categories, collecting enough overall points to win the high school division. Students created artworks based on this year’s theme—Beauty Discovered.

Joshua Hooper from Elizabeth City placed 1st in photography, 1st in collage, and 3rd in painting. Rachel Welsh from Elizabeth City placed 1st in drawing. Bre’Onna Powell from Winfall, NC placed 5th in mixed media. All students’ works will be judged in a live exhibition at the State Final on December 5th at Wakefield High School in Raleigh.

NEAAAT competed against seven other high schools: Brunswick Early College, Wayne School of Engineering, Gates County, John A. Holmes, Northwest Halifax, Southeast Halifax and Thales Academy. Two NEAAAT students, Mogan Willis and Mylene Joco, also competed in painting and drawing in the middle school division. At the statewide finals, the works by Hooper, Welsh and Powell will compete against the winning pieces from the Central and Western Regional competitions.

On November 14th, NEAAAT’s Dance Ensemble, the Soular Orbiters, competed in the Just for Kix Dance Ensemble at Broughton High School in Raleigh. Co-captain and SGA president Brooke Bunning, Jewel Nellom, Bre’Onna Powell, Nisaa Shabazz, Ian Campbell, Isabelle Wilson, Paul Pickop, Terryion Brown, Isabella Kelly-Goss, Sarah Spencer and Savannah Ester performed in the Lyrical/Contemporary category to “Mad World” by Gary Jules. The team also performed a dubstep remix of “Problem ft. Iggy Azalea” by Ariana Grande in the Hip Hop/Jazz category. Both performances received positive feedback from the judges. Judge Natalie Marrowe wrote, “The waving and tutting is a unique approach,” referring to dubstep duo performances by Pickop and Brown. Co-captain Madeline Twiford was unable to attend but was instrumental in preparing her teammates.

Art Showcase and the Just for Kix Dance Ensemble are competitions hosted by the North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities. The competition recognizes the best individual artists, art teams, and dance ensembles in NCASA member middle and high schools.

Do You Know How To Communicate?

By: Ivone’ Tatem

Do you ever find it difficult to stay off of your electronic devices when you are in a room filled with people?

This is a tremendous problem for people in our generation.  Some of us do not know how to properly communicate with others. I recently noticed the severity of this issue and decided to address it. We do not intentionally do this, it just happens because technology is a tool that makes finding information easier.

Since we use our mobile devices daily, we should know how to use them safely.

Technology Facts: It Is Not Good To Sleep With Your Phone Next To You

 1. It is not good to sleep with your phone next to you because you can set your pillow on fire.

This may seem impossible, but it has happened. A Texas teenager was a witness to this severe case. She did not suffer from any severe injuries.

 2. It is not good to sleep with your phone next to you because you can keep yourself awake. The light from your screen makes your body think it is daytime. Therefore, your body is forced to stay alert. In order to receive proper sleep, you should power down all electronics two hours before bedtime.

 3. It is not good to sleep with your phone next to you because it gives off electromagnetic radiation. There is a study that shows a possible relation to electromagnetic radiation from phones to cancer.

Next time you want to put your phone beside you while you’re sleeping, THINK AGAIN!

Career Column

Doctor/Physician

by Jorim Cole

When most people think of doctors, they think of the money that they can make. It is true that doctors often receive a high salary in comparison to some other jobs, but it takes a lot of work to get there. You need a four-year Bachelor’s degree, but you do not have to wait until college to start earning it. It is advised that you start in maybe your junior year. It is critical that you excel in the fields of chemistry, calculus, anatomy, and biology. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) must be taken in order to get into medical school, which lasts for another four years. You must then earn your license by taking a national exam, and then you must complete your residency, which is extra training. The residency can last up to eight years depending on your abilities and the specific field that you decide on.

On average, a care physician makes $220,000 a year, whereas anesthesiologists can make up to $430,000 a year.

Possible Perks include the large salary, the respect that you get, the education that you can get, and best of all, the good that you are doing your country. If you perform an operation, or prescribe a drug, you are responsible for your patient’s health. If you save their life or fix a problem, the gratitude and credit goes to you.

Some Possible Negatives are the fact that you can be called at any time, even if you are not working. The work day is usually busy, and can often times be very hectic. You must keep a detailed description of your patient so that you can refer back to it in case something changes, or needs to be addressed. This must be done for every client that you serve. The pressure while operating can be extreme. A person’s life is depending on you. If you fail, and kill the person, you may have to explain to the family what happened, and the work that you did will be investigated. If the patient died by things outside of your control, then you are ‘clear’. Death is natural and happens every once in awhile, but if there was a procedure issue or failure, your company will probably be sued and you will be fired almost instantly.

I’m being bullied but they think I’m okay with it -SadPerson

Dear SadPerson,

I’m guessing these are your ‘friends’ that are giving you a hard time. Maybe it’s time to get new friends. You shouldn’t hang out with people that make you feel bad about yourself. Find people you actually feel comfortable hanging around. If these ‘friends’ don’t really mean it, tell them that it’s not cool. If they really care, they’ll understand and change the way they interact with you. Otherwise, try to ignore them and tell a coach. Ignoring them will make them lose their power over you. Coaches can help monitor the situation and eliminate bullying. NEAAAT is a great school with really good coaches here to help you who will not tolerate bullying.

Try to stay positive, SadPerson. Your outlook on a situation can have a huge impact.

Love,

Athena

NCAA Football: What is going on with the Rankings?

by David Johnson

For all of those NCAA football fans, Clemson is #1 in overall rankings. I personally feel that once Clemson gets into their tougher games they will drop instantly. I say that because they will face Ohio State, Toledo, and Duke, and all three of them are very good teams.

Clemson was not in the top 25 for rankings; when the season started, they were 34th in the country. Once the season started, Clemson automatically went to 6th place and gradually made it to 3rd place. Now that they are 8-0 and in first place, they are the target team to beat for all the schools. I strongly believe that Clemson will drop back down to 34th once they play the harder ranked schools.

When it comes down to who has the best players, I think that Ohio State has that on lockdown. While Clemson has a good quarterback and a good defense, they  almost have no chemistry as a team. The NFL has recently just released the first ever power ranking of college teams. The result for Clemson was 27th.

Now on to Ohio state with the 3rd spot. On the rankings behind Alabama, Ohio state has the best roster for their conservative style offense. Their defense has a very good leader, Chris Ash. Ash is among the top of defensive coordinators. He is ranked by the NFL right under the Texans defensive coordinator, Romeo Crenell which is 17th in ranking as of now. Ohio state, last years champions, has a record of 8-0 as well as Alabama and Clemson.

If you want to compare teams in the top three, here is what I have to say. The Clemson team has about a 60% chance to stay in the top 3 the rest of the season while Alabama has a 85% chance of getting the top spot before the end of the season and holding on to it. Ohio state on the other hand, they are like I said, the best team in my opinion and statistically. I strongly believe that the Buckeyes will be reappearing in the championship which could be a tight game \either way. As many people know, I am a Duke fan. While I try to make Duke sound like the greatest thing on Earth, I have to say that they are not at the rank they should be. I personally believe that they shouldn’t be ranked in the top 25 at all. Yes, their record may show that they are a good team, but they break under pressure. Even though the referees messed up the call, Duke had no defense on that kick return against Miami, they got juked about 20 times. They also had about 5 or 6 tackles being broke.

That game truly proves that when they are in a lot of pressure and up against a big team, they will fall apart and not be able to stop the opposing team at any cost. Their defense might look good when they are playing against a team that isn’t ranked in the top 40, but in the top 30, no. I feel like from what I have seen and have read, the only hope for Duke right now is to continue to rely on Thomas Sirk on offense and Dwayne Norman on defense. I feel like they should be switched with my least favorite college, UNC.

UNC offers one of the best offenses and best wide receiver choices in the whole NCAA. They may have an average defense this year, but their offense is almost unstoppable. They have scored 98% of their points from touchdowns. Only 12 of their points this year has come from field goals. That is the best in the NCAA as of now. Their coaching staff knows the game of football inside and out, which is why they coach such a good UNC team this year.

That is my take on the NCAA rankings this season so far. Feel free to email me at davidjohnson@northeastacademy.org with any suggestions or comments.

Organized Madness

by Samuel Avondo

Written 11/19/15

So here we are, another issue. Some things have happened and some things will happen. Some pertained to school, others to the globe and others still to people in general.

On Friday, November 12th the school (except for me) went to watch a play. I have nothing against plays, but why would I go to one when I could stay in a quiet room basically alone with the ghosts of my past? Also I was able to have two hours of time to do what I needed to get done. As far as I know the majority of attendants seemed to enjoy the event.

It’s November and Thanksgiving (for those that celebrate it) is nearly here. Despite it not even being December yet, people are  putting up Christmas (for those who practice it) decorations. Personally, the whole ‘giving of thanks’ idea is wonderfully noble, but giving all the thanks a human being owes the sentient (and even non-sentient) creatures around it would take an entire week. You have to think that you would have to individually thank each  bacteria in and around your body. That’s just the first thing you can’t see that you would have to thank.

With the coming of Thanksgiving, so doth “Black Friday”, a day that heralds the coming of holiday shopping. It’s an absolutely insane day, characterized by waiting from 2am to opening to get whatever is on sale and becoming the king (or queen) of the department store by following a violent trail of synchronized stabbing, shopping isle robbery and general cutthroat-ness. That’s Black Friday. Okay, maybe I am describing 15th century Europe, again. They’re the same thing, right?

Why does it always feel like these are too short? I’m going to have to call it here, so this means that my wonderful piece of organized madness has to conclude.

Passwords: one of the more common methods of unlocking something such as your phone or computer, but sometimes it gets hard to remember all of your passwords. New technology is being developed to solve this problem for high security places like the pentagon by using the way someone’s brain reacts internally to words like: DNA, or FBI. Scientists at Binghamton University showed a group of volunteers a series of words while recording their brain waves, and a computer was able to guess which participant it was with 94% accuracy. According to the researchers, it won’t be applied to small security devices like phones and computers, at least not in the near future. This discovery can potentially prevent hackers from getting into files they aren’t supposed to, since  they cannot steal someone else's brain print the way they can copy or steal a fingerprint or a retina. Maybe one day in the future you might just have to read a few words in order to pay your bills!

 Black Friday Eve (Sarcastic) Advice

by The Sarcastic Penguin

(Disclaimer: Do not take any of my advice seriously. It’s called sarcastic advice for a reason.)

Once again I have decided to completely disregard your comments and actual needs. Eventually I will, just not now. So due to that I need to do something for Black Friday Eve… Wait, it’s Thanksgiving? What's the difference? So without further ado, here's possibly the least amount of work i’ve put into anything. Enjoy

Need something to be thankful for?

  • I don’t know..maybe having a home to live in? Food on a table? Maybe just being alive in general? What? No? Seriously? You’re alive! You’re not thankful for that? Wow.

  • Your family. I’m serious. It is the most classic thing to be thankful for. Just say that and your family will give you a big group of “awww”’s and then they’ll move on.

  • Education. People really buy into that stuff. They love the thought of a child that loves to learn. If you do love to learn then great. You’re 1 in let's say… 7,000,000,000. Thumbs up to you kid.

  • America. I don’t know. Say something about freedom and giving thousands of Native Americans smallpox. They’ll love it.

  • Throw some random stuff together. Just say a bunch of crap that sounds emotional but really makes no sense. In the end, it’s the tone, not the words.

  • Turkey. This is an absolute last resort. The turkey is for the people that have nothing left to say. It’s the best back up. “I’m thankful for this beautiful wild bird that we slaughtered so that we can be thankful.”

Annoying family relatives that only show up this one time because they feel like that makes them ‘included’?

  • Run. You can still save yourself. The aunt is there ready to pinch cheeks and rub your head. You don’t want to stay there.

  • They blocked the doorway! There is no escape. You must hide. Try a closet that no one opens, or that one room that people just kind of throw stuff in.

  • Bare through it. This is possibly the worst option. You would have to deal with Uncle Lenny’s jokes and Aunt Petunia's hugs. And you would need to do this all with a smile, or your cover would be blown.

  • Fight your way out. If you're trapped but don’t want to hide or bare through the pain, then there is only one way out: through them. Grab the nearest baseball bat and get swinging. Aim for the knees.

Worried that you’ll get trampled at black Friday sales?

  • Wear a suit of steel armor. Be the trampler, not the trampled.

  • What? Cops chasing after you because you trampled hundreds of innocent moms trying to buy their son the newest Xbox? Turn yourself in.

  • Now you’re in jail? You’re blaming me for this? Ah, just be good. Maybe you’ll be eligible for parole.

  • What? It's a life sentence without parole? Break out!

  • Cops firing at you for breaking out? Go to a cliff side that is over a huge body of water. Make sure it is dark and stormy. That makes it more dramatic.

  • They cornered you on the cliff? Jump off like they do in the movies!

  • You’re dead? Who would have guessed that? Anyways the real advice here is: don’t go. It’s really that simple.

You completely disregard my last piece of advice and go anyways but can’t find the thing you want because someone else took it?

  • Trip them. When they are down take the thing you want and run. It’ll be a war zone out there so you’ll need to act fast.

  • You could simply ask them for it. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to give it to you. Haha, I’m hilarious.

  • Enrage another shopper. Say that the person you're trying to steal from has what they want. They will attack without remorse or hesitation. You get someone to do the dirty work for you.

  • Literally any other form of physical violence. Minus explosions. You want the product intact.

  • Online shopping. I’m not kidding. It's a lot less dangerous and you still get the stuff you want.

Can’t find a place to put your christmas tree?

  • IT IS NOVEMBER. NOT DECEMBER. MY GOD, PEOPLE THERE IS AN ORDER TO THESE HOLIDAYS.

Tech Block

by Connor Reavis

On this issue of tech block, we will take a look into Project Ara, Google’s new plan for a smartphone. This phone isn’t like any you have seen before. This phone is referred to as a ‘modular phone’, meaning that you can upgrade it using attachments. First, you purchase the basic frame. This frame holds the modules you can buy from 3rd party developers or Google itself. Virtually any part of the of the phone can be easily replaced in seconds. Say you need a new battery, easy fix. You can just disable the magnet lock and slide the old one out and put a new one in! Want a better camera? Easy, just slide the new one in! If you are tired of having to wait two years to get a new feature or to replace a phone that is broken or cracked, Project Ara is for you.

The Museum of the Albemarle

There are many different areas in which an individual can volunteer at the museum. Skill levels needed vary, some minimal, others more in depth. Standard among these are strong communication skills, public speaking, interest in history and enthusiasm for history. Knowledge of North Carolina and United States history is helpful but not necessary. Opportunities are available during the week and also on weekends.

Albemarle Hopeline

The Albemarle Hopeline is a private, non-profit organization that provides comprehensive direct and preventive services to victims of family violence, sexual assault, and teen dating violence in the counties of Pasquotank, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Perquimans, and Gates.

Food Bank of the Albemarle

There are so many jobs and opportunities available for volunteering at Food Bank of the Albemarle. Even if you cannot donate your time, you can gather up food, resources for the Food Bank of the Albemarle and help promote the FBOA to sponsors and others.

Sentara Albemarle Medical Center

As a volunteer, your role is an ambassador, a friend and companion to the patients and their families and an educator to the public. Positions are available in the coffee shop, at reception/information desks throughout the hospital, as patient representatives or palliative care companions and helping with transporting patients.

The American Red Cross

Every single day, the American Red Cross helps people in emergencies. Whether it’s one displaced family, thousands of disaster victims, or providing care and comfort to an ill or injured service member or veteran or support to a military family member, our vital work is made possible by people like you. It is through the time and care of ordinary people that we can do extraordinary things. The Red Cross is always looking for people with various backgrounds, talents and skill levels.

Not One Tear Project

“We are a passionate volunteer based Non-profit 501(c) organization, partnering with qualified professionals, the general public and those who serve it. Our purpose is to prevent future and advocate for sexually exploited women and children, by providing services and resources free of charge during their recovery from victims to victors.”
