Yogi Berra: A Dynasty that has Left

by David Johnson

At the age of ninety, Yogi Berra died on September 23, 2015. Berra played in the MLB for 14 years (1936-1950). He had played for the New York Yankees for 13 of those 14 years. Berra won 10 championships, and he had played in 14 of the championships. Berra was an all-american catcher for the Yankees and Mets. Many people think that Berra played alongside Babe Ruth, but he didn’t.

On May 12, 1925, Yogi Berra was born in St. Louis, MO .His mother had to raise him by herself, because his father had left at a young age. Berra had went to school until the 8th grade and dropped out, to take on the sport of baseball full time. In 1933, he went back to school for the eleventh grade and became an instant college prospect for baseball.

Berra decided not to go to any college that offered him a scholarship and go right to the MLB after high school. Berra got picked 3rd overall by the New York Mets. After his first year in the MLB, he got traded to the New York Yankees. With the Yankees on his side, Berra became the most popular catcher of the time.

After 3 seasons, he won his first championship and then he went on a victory streak for 10 years. As the end of his second 6-year contract with the Yankees, he decided to only sign a 3-year contract. Due to his age Berra didn’t play much those last 3 years, but the Yankees still went to the championships all three years, but lost.

When Berra retired from playing for the Yankees, he was inducted in the Army hall of remembrance for serving in World War 2. Berra also became the manager for the Yankees, in 1972. Berra was the 4th catcher inducted into the MLB hall of fame.

The Yankees have recently lost one of their greatest players in team history. Berra was the most respected Yankee player. When Berra died, Derek Jeter, retired Shortstop for the Yankees said, ”He was a big role model for me and he had inspired me to be who I am today.” Yogi Berra, is one of the greatest players of all time.

Chase the Goose Update!

About last week when one of the flocks left, Ami joined them. We had previously thought that Ami was Chase’s mate, but I researched this and it turns out Chase is only a year old and Ami was just the goose chosen to stay behind and look out for him. She was just there to see if he would heal, and since he didn’t, she left. Chase is doing well right now and seems to get along with the flocks that are passing through now. We are waiting for ECSU’s response to our proposal for him as they took a vote. If they vote yes, the Chase Activists will began working on improving Chase's situation with food and shelter for the upcoming winter.

More fundraisers will come in the future as well as more prizes. If you have information or want to help or donate to Chase, contact me at alexismonahan@northeastacademy.org

Northeast Academy of Aerospace and Advanced Technologies had a student-run picture day, and it was a success! Joshua Hooper, Kip Shaw and I were the photographers and the pictures turned out great. The overall format was created and organized by Bre’Onna Powell; kudos to you! We all had many helpers along the way (Thanks Mrs. Rook, and we had a great time overall).

Picture day was yet another thing that shows the counties that this school is amazing. We are part of a school that has an awesome team who are willing to listen to the concerns of the student body and to teach the students one-on-one. Making proposals and just talking to the coaches is impacting our day to day school life. This event is another example of how this school provides many opportunities for the students to truly make it our own.

#ILookLikeAnEngineer

by Destiny Cook

On October 2nd, if you were getting

your picture taken at NEAAAT, you may

have been asked if you wanted to parti-

pate in the amazing campaign entitled

#ilooklikeanengineer.

#ilooklikeanengineer is a campaign

created by an engineer named Isis

Wegner.  Because of various

stereotypes, whenever she would tell

someone her occupation, people would tell her she didn’t look like an engineer. When you think of an engineer, what comes to mind? To most people, a stereotypical engineer is an old, white man building something. The truth is anyone can be an engineer. Around the first few weeks at NEAAAT, our engineering instructer, Coach Rook, told us about this campaign and Isabella Kelly-Goss was inspried by it. She had the idea to take photos of some of the student body with signs that said '#ilooklikeanengineer'. She did this to combat stereotyping in the workplace, of not only against females, but also males who don’t fit the look of an 'ordinary engineer'. Kelly-Goss will be using the images she took to show NEAAAT’s support for the project.

The Dance Team was put together by Brooke Buning so that maybe the dance-lovers of NEAAAT could meet after school and put together a performance.

The Dance Team’s mission is to get to regional dance competitions. “We really have to work, though,” said Madeline Twiford, a member of the Dance Team. “We only have a month, but everyone is motivated.” For a contemporary dance, they are choreographing ‘Mad World’ by Gary Jules. For hip-hop, they want to do ‘Problem’ by Ariana Grande.

They are hoping to get into the Just For Kix dance ensemble competition held in Raleigh, NC, on the 14th of November. The State Final will be held on the 5th of December. The east regional, which is in Raleigh, will be held in the Broughton High School. The participants are allowed to present one or both of two categories: Jazz/Hip-hop, or Contemporary/Lyrical.

Of course, the Just For Kix has requirements of the two categories. For Jazz/Hip-hop - This routine should consist of a well-balanced mixture of difficulty, creativity, and technical skills. It may consist of jazz, hip-hop, or a combination of these elements including the latest style/funk dance movement with tempo variations. And for Contemporary/Lyrical - This routine is an interpretive dance style that illustrates an interpretation of a musical piece. The dance piece should include a well-balanced mixture of difficulty, creativity, musicality, and technical skills that is definitive of the dance genre.

Unfortunately, the Dance Team isn’t taking any new members at the moment. But when they are, they’ll let you in. “We’re not taking anyone else because it’s so late, but when the time comes, they just join,” said Madeline Twiford. So perhaps after the regionals, they will open the team to new members.

One of the best things about the Dance Team is you don’t have to be an experienced dancer in order to be in it. Sometimes being a part of a dance group means learning how to dance; not just being good at it from the start. Madeline Twiford stated, “Most people in the Dance Team aren’t experienced, but we’re all learning.” Even experienced people learn important things that they may have missed or just didn’t learn.

Welcome NEAAAT Dance Team!

Quote of the Day: Be who you needed when you were younger. -Author Unknown

I feel like I don't fit in with my friends. -When you spend time with your friends the goal isn’t trying to be like them, it’s to have fun with them. If you just feel uncomfortable hanging out with them try to find a common ground, what you all like to do. And if that doesn’t work talk to your friends they might feel out of place too.

I have too much homework! I can never do any fun things outside of school. -Break down what you get each day. If it feels overwhelming try to finish half of the homework you were given and finish the other half the next night.

I want to know how to be AWESOME! -This is going to be totally cliche but, just be you. Don’t let the haters stand in your way of greatness. If they don’t budge let them be your stepping stones.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a very popular Indie game created by a team of three developers under the company known as Bethesda. The game is a very fun platformer with very linear gameplay. The story mode of this game only takes around 4 hours complete. The game has a money hungry problem, it costs only 5 dollars on its website but the dlc is endless and very expensive. Multiplayer is included but poorly done and not very popular. If you're looking for a short fun game then Minecraft is for you but beware the community, for it be quite toxic. In conclusion, I rate this game a piece of cornbread out of 3 dead wendigo babies.

Career Column

by Jorim Cole

Biology/Veterinary/Zoology

All of the careers mentioned above have you dealing with animals. If you like working with animals, or caring for them, this may be the job for you. The average income for a veterinarian in 2014 was $98,000. To become a veterinarian, you must complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree program and receive licensure. All branches are expected to excel in science, particularly in the fields of biology, pathology, or veterinary medicine. You are expected to achieve minimum scores on the Veterinary College Admission Test (VCAT), the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The DVM degree takes four years to complete. To become a zoologist, you need to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology or a closely related field such as environmental science or biology. Depending on the requirements of your employer, a Master’s degree in zoology is sufficient for many research positions. To become a zoologist who works in research and university teaching positions, a PhD in zoology is needed.

Possible perks include being around potentially fascinating animals and the fact that you are helping the environment and the animals that live in it.

Possible negatives are the fact that you are responsible for what happens while the animal is under your care. If something happens the animal, you can be sued. Animals can also carry diseases, and they can spread to you if you are not careful.
